How to Recognize and Avoid Spear-Phishing Attacks

For every benefit that comes with modern business technology, there’s also a precaution you need to take in order to prevent disaster. Email is at the heart of most business communications, allowing you to easily keep up with clients, co-workers, vendors, and family. Wait… What’s a Spear-Phishing Attack?

With malware, spam, phishing scams, and so many other online threats to keep up with, it’s easy to lose track. Spear-Phishing is an especially dangerous and devious form of Phishing attacks.

Criminals use information about you (often gathered from your social media or other online activity) to deceive you into feeling a sense of trust – usually making you believe the Emails are coming from a friend or a business that you’re familiar with. From there, they attempt to steal personal and business-related data, from financial information and passwords to credit card numbers and important documents.

How Do You Stay Protected?

With Spear-Phishing, you need to be extra cautious. Attackers can gather your personal information from any number of sources. Consider these:

  • If your Facebook page isn’t comprehensively secure, attackers are able to find information on your friends, schooling, location, activities, and so on. The same goes for Twitter, Instagram, and any other social media sites. The more information they have, the more specific their attack will be.
  • Are you using up-to-date security software? It’s crucial that you’re keeping your Email and network protected with every resource available, and that includes security software and smart password protection.

Don’t Take the Bait

At the end of the day, you should never let anything compromise your livelihood. Never be afraid to directly contact friends, associates, businesses, or anyone else who you’re exchanging Emails with – verify that it’s in fact them before sending information or downloading attachments.
